Our History

Our church has a rich history that goes back to 1887, when the Mission of St. Matthew was established by the Rev. Francis J. Murdoch of St. Luke, Salisbury. St. Matthew's is one of eleven Episcopal churches that the Rev. Murdoch established in the area between 1887 and 1890.

The Hispanic/Latino congregation of San Mateo was founded on July 14th 2002, an outreach by four small Anglo rural congregations, the Yadkin Valley Cluster. They had felt the call of the Lord Jesus to welcome the Spanish-speaking immigrants who have been arriving in the Salisbury area by the hundreds.

In 2008 the Rev. Frederick Clarkson was appointed as priest for both the Anglo and the Latino congregations.

The Eucharist is celebrated in English on Sundays at 11:00 AM, while the Misa (eucharist in Spanish) is held at 1:00 PM.
